ICT_Tourism_Portal of Suriname

Eco-tourism

"Responsible travel to natural areas that conserves the environment and improves the well-being of local people." (TIES, 1990)

This means that the following principles should be upheld by those who implement and participate in Eco tourism activities:  

·         Minimize impact on nature.

·         Build environmental and cultural awareness and respect.

·         Provide positive experiences for both visitors and hosts.

·         Provide direct financial benefits for conservation.

·         Provide financial benefits and empowerment for local people.

·         Raise sensitivity to host countries' political, environmental, and social climate.

Suriname, with its tropical rain forest, its diversity of flora and fauna and its versatile cultures, has a treasure of experiences to offer Eco tourists.

Eco tourism, though, is still in its infancy in Suriname. For Eco tourism to flourish, a lot of areas have to improve e.g. infrastructure, environmental awareness, education, marketing, financial and technology.

The project our group will work on is creating an Eco-tourism Web portal for Suriname.

The purpose of this portal is to create a “one-stop-window” where stakeholders can get a variety of information or offer their product/services.

Owners/managers of Eco tourism Resorts can get information e.g. about Eco tourism standards or about how to get financial help.

They can also place links to their sites so Eco tourists can get information about destinations in Suriname. Tourists will also be able to book a trip, because travel agents will also be accommodated on the website

Investors can get information about what they’re investing in.

I.C.T. businesses offering products/services for example: Provide Eco Resorts with GPS devices they can offer visiting tourists so they can easily be tracked down in case they wander off.

With our project we hope to contribute in improving several areas such as environmental awareness, education, marketing, financial and technology.
